Ricki Johnson, 72, of Zapata, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026. She was born in Port Lavaca, Texas, in 1953 to Teddy R. Smith and Lillie Smith, and was also lovingly raised by her stepfather, J.C. Bryant.

Ricki dedicated her life to education and to helping others. As a retired teacher, she was deeply loved by her students and colleagues. Known by many as their favorite science teacher, she was recognized as Teacher of the Year during her career. Ricki had a gift for making people laugh, sharing kindness, and inspiring those around her.

Her compassion extended far beyond the classroom. Ricki loved volunteering at her church and the church's food pantry, always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need. She believed strongly in serving her community and lived that belief every day.

Above all, Ricki was devoted to her family. She married the love of her life, Macky Johnson Jr., in 1975, and they shared many loving years together before his passing in 1999. She never missed a chance to support her children and later her grandchildren, attending every event she could and cheering them on with pride. Her warmth, humor, and kindness touched everyone who knew her.

Ricki is survived by her children: Jacquline "Jackie" Johnson and spouse Jamie Johnson; James "Jim" Johnson and spouse Viviana Johnson; and John Johnson III and spouse Delia Johnson. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Guy Christopher Grant, Cheyenne Grant, Shawnee Grant (Andrew Browning), Christopher Lee Buentello (Rhonda), Jordan Buentello (Andrea Montes), Emily Johnson (Daniel Guardiian), Jazlynn Johnson, Noe Guerra Jr., Kaitlynn Johnson, James Bryant Johnson Jr., Joseph Ramirez (April), Ashlee Cantu (Eduardo), Courtney Garcia (Luis), Karina Bernal (Daniel), and Jacob Ramirez (Faith). She was also blessed with 21 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life.

A visitation and memorial service will be held at Rose Garden Funeral Home in Zapata, Texas, on Friday, March 20 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 21 at 9:00 a.m. In honor of Ricki's joyful spirit, she asked that her service be a celebration of life rather than a sad occasion, and encouraged everyone attending to wear bright, colorful clothing to celebrate the happiness she brought to others. Flowers are appreciated, but the family also encourages donations in Ricki's memory to the places where she shared so much of her joy and passion: King's Way Church of Zapata and its food pantry.

Ricki Johnson will be remembered for her kindness, her laughter, her dedication to her students, and her unwavering love for her family and community. Her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.
