ZAPATA, TEXAS- We are deeply saddened to share that Maria Elia Gonzalez, age 84, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026. A devoted mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, Maria Elia's warmth and kindness touched all who knew her. Mary, as many of you knew her, was born in Zapata, Texas, and she later lived and worked for 30 years in Laredo, Texas.

Mrs. Gonzalez is preceded in death by her parents, Raul Flores, Sr. and Viviana Flores Ramirez.

Mrs. Gonzalez is survived by her two grown children, James Paul Johnston and Mary Ann McElwain; five grandchildren; two brothers, Raul Flores Jr., Jaime Luis Flores; by her loving husband, Jose Enrique "Ico" Gonzalez and by numerous other family members and friends.

Visitation hours will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. with a Catholic Chapel Service at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Garden Funeral Home.

Committal services will follow at Zapata County Cemetery.
