James Scott Anderson, 50, of Zapata, passed away in the Laredo Medical Center on January 29, 2024.  Born March 14, 1973 in Brownfield to Sue Zanne Childress Anderson and Ralph David Anderson, Scott did everything in life with vigor, enthusiasm and with little thought of the consequences.

Diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia at the age of 5, Scott received treatment at M.D. Anderson in Houston throughout his childhood. The disease and treatment contributed to the early deterioration of his body and he fought many health issues throughout this life. During the last few years, he struggled with constant pain due to back issues and previous injuries.

Scott attended schools in Brownfield, Midland and Bishop and he graduated from Bishop High School in 1992. He worked in the oilfield as a mud logger and directional driller for almost 30 years and enjoyed being on the rig and working alongside the crew.

When he was not working, one of his favorite activities was playing golf at Rolling Oaks Golf Course in Rising Star alongside his step-father, great-aunt and anyone who would play with him. If he could not be on the course, Scott enjoyed the noise, the people and excitement of being in a casino.

Fluent in Spanish, Scott loved living in Zapata. He never met a stranger, made friends everywhere he went and would give someone the shirt off of his back to help them out. Scott was devoted to his animals and had many faithful sidekicks over the years, including Sam, Russell and Bogie.

Scott is survived by his sister, Kim Merryman; niece Chelcey Akins and her husband Courtney; great-niece, Ti'Lee Akins; great-nephew, Payden Henson, all of Boswell, Oklahoma; great-aunt, Fredda Criswell of Carbon; and many cousins from all over Texas.

He was preceded in death by his mother Sue Zanne Childress Grier; step-father, Gerald Grier, both of Rising Star; his niece Emily Morgan of Hugo, Oklahoma; and his maternal grandparents, Oleta Baker Childress and Brady James 'Skeet' Childress of Brownfield.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date at Rose Garden Funeral Home in Zapata, TX.

Those wishing to honor Scott are invited to make a donation in his memory to a local animal shelter.
