ZAPATA, TEXAS—Gilberto Davila Sr., 85, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, in Zapata, Texas. Gilberto was born in La Lajita Ranch, Tx on October 12, 1939, to Francisco and Maria Davila.  He was the oldest of 8 children.

Mr. Davila was a 1960 Zapata High School grad. He boasted about an incredible high school pitching career and helped Zapata earn their first ever Bi-District Championship. Later as a coach he led "Las Falconas" to countless championships in the span of over 10 years. Coach Davila like many knew him, was also Zapata Co. Little League President and coached countless of teams in a span of 20 + years. His passion for baseball lasted a lifetime, culminating in the pride of seeing one of his players reach the major leagues. He leaves behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and devotion to the game."

Mr. Davila was also a trailblazer, becoming one of the first Mexican American employees hired by Texaco (now Chevron)—a historic move that paved the way for others. He dedicated over 25 years to the company until an injury led to his early retirement.

While his passion for baseball was great the passion and love for his family and friends surpassed that. He was a devoted father, cherished grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered not only for the barriers he broke, but for the lives he touched along the way.

Mr. Davila is preceded in death by his parents Francisco and Maria Davila; son, Domingo Gonzalez; brother, Francisco Davila; sister, Esther Hernandez; nephew, Juan Solis; niece, Leticia Solis.

Mr. Davila leaves behind his beloved wife of 40 years, Blanca Estela Davila; children, Gilbert (Maria) Davila Jr., Gina (Carlos) Martinez, Ricardo Davila, Noraliza (Lucio) Sanchez, Melissa (Miguel) Trevino, Jose Daniel (Rosalva) Davila, Juan (Jackie) Gonzalez, Jessica (Pablo Acosta) Davila, Francisco (Kristal) Davila; 36 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchildren; siblings, San Juana Solis, Alejandra (Miguel) Martinez, Julia (†Alvaro) Salinas, Estela (Jorge) Solis, Azeneth (Sylvia) Salazar, Catarino (Melissa) Davila and by numerous other family members and friends.

Visitation hours will be held on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Rose Garden Funeral Home.

On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, we will open at 8:00 a.m. with a chapel service at 10:00 a.m. at Rose Garden Funeral Home.

Committal services will follow at Zapata County Cemetery.
