San Antonio, Texas – Alma S. Evans, 74, passed away after a long battle with breast cancer on November 09, 2022, at Methodist Hospital.  She was born September 3, 1948, in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Jose Artemio and Magdalena (Contreras) Sandoval.

Alma attended St. Agnes Academy and graduated from Lamar High School in Houston in 1968.  Following graduation, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts with dual majors in Art and Spanish from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, in 1972.  She was a proud member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. While in college at Sam Houston she met and was engaged to Edmundo Eugenio Martinez of Hebbronville, Texas. They wed in 1972 and were married for fifteen years. Their journey found them moving to and planting roots in Zapata, Texas. Alma was an educator for 33 years having taught in the primary and secondary levels, specializing in Art.  Alma loved the people of her small town and stayed active in the community and most importantly with her students. She was the proud sponsor of the ZHS Strutter Drill Team and Student Council Sponsor throughout her tenure at Zapata High School.  Alma was a devout Roman Catholic, who's Faith carried and guided her throughout her entire life. Alma was also an active member of the Zapata County Fair Association and helped facilitate the ZCF Queen's Contest for many years. In 1997, Alma married John Pinnard Evans of Calallen, Texas.  She moved to Calallen and taught Spanish at Calallen High School until 2005 when she retired.  Alma was a charter member of the Blue Star Mothers in Corpus Christi, Texas.  She was a proud patriot and Texan, an avid reader and enjoyed needle point embroidery.  Her biggest enjoyment came from loving and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband John.  Alma is survived by her son, Edmundo Eugenio Martinez Jr. and his wife, Diana of Katy; daughter Jennifer Martinez Muenchow and her husband, Matt, of Marion; three grandchildren, Victoria Rose Martinez, Maxwell Charles Muenchow and Vivienne Scarlett Martinez; one sister, Anna Luz Sandoval of Kyle; and one niece, Tricia Arredondo Palacios and her husband Leo III of Kyle.

A service of remembrance will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 at Rose Garden Funeral Home, 2102 N US Highway 83, Zapata, TX.  On Friday, November 18, 2022 we will open at 8 a.m. at Rose Garden Funeral Home and a celebratory mass will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1609 Glenn St, Zapata, TX at 10 a.m. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity in Alma Evans' name.
